IT department manager

Due to the widespread use of IT in all departments of the university, it is increasingly dependent on functioning IT operations. As the complexity of IT systems and the demands placed on them are increasing at the same time, effective support can only be achieved with clearly defined competences and responsibilities given the current staffing levels at the university. This applies in particular to IT security. In 2006, regulations were therefore adopted for the IT organisation in general (IT concept) and for IT security in particular (IT security concept), in which the responsibilities were defined from the level of the university management to the level of the faculties / central facilities. The function of an IT department manager was introduced, who bears operational responsibility for the entire faculty / central institution. The President is currently appointing the IT department managers of the individual faculties/institutions as part of the introduction of an IT security process.

The core tasks here are

• Creation of operational IT support structures in the department (network managers, system/application administrators, ...)
• Coordination of IT security incidents
• Collaboration in the creation of IT concepts
• Structured recording and documentation of IT deployment
• Notification and updating of IT procedures
• Applying for firewall activations
• Ensuring continuity in the support of IT resources
• Coordinating internal IT training and information events

The following requirements are necessary to fulfil these tasks:

• Participation in all planning of IT deployment (especially in the context of appointment negotiations)
• Participation in all matters relating to IT procurement
• Participation in all matters relating to the awarding of IT contracts
• The authority to make decisions in their area of responsibility

The IT department manager acts as the control centre between those involved in IT deployment to ensure that IT deployment within the departments runs as smoothly as possible.
