VPN - Virtual Private Network

VPN - secure access to the university network

A so-called Virtual Private Network (VPN) enables the establishment of a virtual encrypted connection directly to the university's data network from any location on the Internet.

The VPN ensures that

  • all data in the public part of the Internet is transmitted in encrypted form,
  • the user has access to restricted information (e.g. the library) via the "virtual" IP address from the university's address range, just as if they were on the university network with their computer,
  • that authorised users can use internal services via the diversions to the VPN concentrator, which are protected against unauthorised access from outside by security rules on the Wingate.

VPN in the WLAN

The use of the VPN concentrator is strongly recommended for access to the university network or Internet, as the security mechanisms provided by the WLAN standard are completely insufficient.

Notes on VPN use

To use the VPN access, you as a member of the university must have a JMU account and install a client programme on your computer, which may be used free of charge. The Information Technology Centre's VPN server supports the protocol:

  • SSL/DTLS with the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

Please note that for the duration of the VPN dial-in - even if you are working on your private computer - you have to use your user ID and are therefore subject to the University of Würzburg's user regulations for information processing systems and the University of Würzburg's university network user regulations.

IMPORTANT! Please make sure that you do NOT dial into the JMU VPN via an existing VPN connection, e.g. via a VPN provided by your anti-virus protection. This can lead to your user account being blocked.
