Software for students
JMU students can obtain software free of charge or at favourable rates through the university’s framework agreements.
The software can be obtained via StudiSoft and installed on personal computers.
Overview of software for students
The range of software on offer may vary depending on the degree programme: some products are restricted to specific degree programmes, meaning that only students on certain programmes can access the software, e.g. ESRI ArcGIS.
Most products are free of charge, but a few are subject to a fee.

The university has taken out a campus licence for ChemDraw.
Please refer to the description in the WebShop or StudiSoft when ordering the relevant product to find out the current term of the agreement.
The licence covers both student access and home use for staff.
The software is available to all staff and students at the University of Würzburg. Staff (home use) and students are also permitted to use the software at home.

The software provided is to be used exclusively for research, teaching and study purposes. Use for any other purposes, in particular commercial use, is expressly prohibited.
Use is permitted only within the specified term of the University of Würzburg’s contract. Thereafter, or upon leaving the university (on the date of de-registration or termination of employment), the software provided by the university (data storage media and backups) must be uninstalled from the computer or laptop or destroyed.
The software is available free of charge to all students at the University of Würzburg. Staff are required to pay a one-off fee of 15 EUR per licence period.
Home use is also permitted.
The software may also be used in CIP computer centres.
The campus licence includes the latest version of Citavi for Windows.
Students can order via StudiSoft, whilst staff can order via the WebShop.

From May 2021, students will have access to Microsoft 365 A3 (with services selected by the university) free of charge for the duration of their studies, subject to the university’s existing licence agreement with Microsoft.
Important to note
Microsoft’s licence terms stipulate that the university’s licences may only be used for university purposes. If you wish to use the software for personal, i.e. non-university, purposes (e.g. creating or presenting documents as part of permitted part-time work, writing letters to your family), you must purchase your own licence.

University staff generally also have access to Microsoft 365 and Office.

Alternatives
The free open-source Office alternatives, LibreOffice or OpenOffice, may be a viable option for many users. Examples of online services include WueTeams, bwSync&Share, Zoom and Jitsi.
The University has entered into a campus licence agreement for MindManager that includes usage rights for students. Please refer to the description in the WebShop or StudiSoft when ordering the relevant product to find out the current term of the agreement.

Note for students: The licence key is distributed via the manufacturer’s portal. Once you have successfully registered, log in to this portal using the password sent to you and upload a valid certificate of enrolment in JPEG or PDF format. Please note: The software provider currently charges a provision fee of approximately 5 EUR.

We trust in the honesty of our staff to ensure that home-use licences are not used in this context, as this is how the home-use entitlement is funded. Special provision for the University Hospital:
Under the terms of the Origin Campus contract, use at the University Hospital is only permitted if the individuals in question are affiliated with the University – for example, if they are University staff, are carrying out joint projects with academic research groups, are members of academic research groups, or are writing academic theses (diploma, PhD, postdoctoral qualification, etc.) which are (co-)supervised by the university. In this case, the ordering/downloading of software must also be carried out via the relevant university department with which the collaboration takes place or to which the staff member belongs.

think-cell is an add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel that allows you to create complex diagrams quickly and easily. It includes features for creating waterfall, Mekko and Gantt charts, amongst others. All slide elements, such as connectors and arrows, can be created with a single mouse click and are automatically positioned exactly where they belong. The consistent design of all diagrams ensures a consistently accurate and professional appearance. It is also possible to manage and maintain the agenda and table of contents.
Use of the product is free of charge for students and staff at the University of Würzburg. Please check the StudiSoft portal for the current licence period and licence key (note: once the licence key has expired, you can view the current licence key via StudiSoft under your existing order). We help our students develop their IT skills by providing free or low-cost software. This service is closely integrated into the course and can be used both in the computer labs and at home.
Why is this important?
Companies expect staff to be able to use common software confidently – proficiency in Office is now taken for granted. We go a step further and also offer tools that foster additional soft skills, such as MindManager for visual working techniques or Citavi for knowledge management.
